How does it work? In a typical network structure, (often referred to as distributed-computing), the client computer would execute all the processing, whilst storing the software-application data on the local hard disk. When the user logs on, security settings are sent from the server to the client alongside any files or required data. As the demand on the client's system resources increases and new software requires higher system resources, the aging workstations performance degrades. This is why many schools are forced to refresh their workstation hardware every three years. Furthermore, every time a new software title is added each of the client workstations requires individual installation, which generates high management and maintenance costs.

In a Citrix thin-client environment, the client computer is relieved of the processing by relocating it to a server farm. In this approach there are multiple, identical servers that store all the software applications and process all the user's data. The client simply displays the screen graphics and sends keyboard strokes and mouse clicks back to the server. Over forty thin-clients can concurrently connect to a single server, dramatically improving the performance of the client by running all the applications at the speed of the server. This model of networking also allows for much more efficient management than in the distributed model, since the application is only required to be installed once on the server to make it available network-wide.
